Highland’s roots in Birmingham were established through CASE Design/Remodeling Birmingham, a name many homeowners still recognize. That legacy was shaped by founder Tom Coan, whose approach to remodeling was built on a rare combination of hands-on trade knowledge and disciplined business thinking.
From early on, Tom knew he was mechanically inclined and loved working with his hands. His father, an engineer, helped shape the way he saw the world: as logical systems that can be understood and mastered. High school shop classes and work alongside a contractor deepened his passion as he watched homes built from the ground up and learned a wide range of practical skills across multiple trades.
After college—and alongside a career in business—Tom settled in Birmingham and continued remodeling as a serious pursuit. Over time, his experiences hiring contractors mirrored what many homeowners encounter: missed appointments, vague estimates, and inconsistent follow-through. He believed homeowners deserved a more professional, reliable experience, and he built CASE Design/Remodeling Birmingham around that principle.
At the core of his philosophy was a simple goal: develop a meaningful understanding of what a client needs, then build the right plan and team to make it happen.
In 2023, Precision Homecrafters acquired Highland Design + Build / CASE Design/Remodeling Birmingham, bringing the Birmingham operation fully under the PHC umbrella. This change wasn’t a rebrand for the sake of rebranding—it was a structural move designed to strengthen the team, expand resources, and deliver a consistent PHC-level client experience in the Birmingham market.
To ensure a smooth transition, Tom Coan stayed on after the acquisition, working with Joshua Dean (PHC President) for two years. Tom officially retired in 2025, after helping carry forward the standards and client-first mindset that shaped the business from the start.
