In past few years the economy has not been our ally and frankly money has been tight. Even though our wallets are not overflowing, we still want to surround ourselves with beautiful and functional things, especially when it comes to our home. The investment in our home is huge. We understand here in the remodeling business the importance of home and the joy of living in a beautiful and functional space even on a strict budget.
Our young Birmingham homeowners were firm on the amount of money they could spend on renovations to the kitchen as first time homeowners. Already having tried a coat of paint on the walls hoping to spice up the drab atmosphere, the kitchen still was lacking the functionality and updated feel they were searching for. After talking with the homeowners and our design team, the plan was to swap up areas of cabinetry for better work flow, add new countertops, backsplash and cabinet crown molding to give this plain kitchen the pizzazz it needed.
To allow for better flow in this galley kitchen, the pantry and refrigerator cabinets swapped places. By doing so, the entry from the garage into the kitchen was greatly improved with the fridge moved to the opposite end wall. The cabinet above the stove was raised for a change in level which added space for a new microwave and vent. The final decorative feature for the cabinets was the adding of molding to trim out all the upper cabinetry. The cabinet molding finishes out the existing cabinetry to better flow with the rest of the home.
Next the old fluorescent light fixtures were replaced with several can lights to brighten up the space as well as a new contemporary pendant light over the eating area. The homeowners chose their pendant fixture from a local big box store which helped in keeping their budget in mind.
We replaced the tired laminate counters with solid stone countertops. Napoli granite was chosen for the counters to accent the existing cherry stained cabinets. To add a more designer element to the space, biscuit colored ceramic subway tile was installed in a classic herringbone pattern for the backsplash. The gloss finish of the ceramic tile adds a little sparkle to the kitchen for a bit of glitz. New stainless appliances, sink and faucet round out this kitchen update.
